This week, Rachel has thoughts. Specifically, thoughts about an article that appeared in Parents titled PSA: Dad is Not the Babysitter.
While the article is well-intended in many ways, it falls back on another trope to explain the imbalance in parenting that’s almost as bad as The Idiot Dad: Supermom, who won’t let anyone do anything, even Dad.
The author, Jenna Autuori Dedic, relates her own anecdote as evidence of this being a self-inflicted situation. Rachel takes issue with it being presented as The Only Reason women can’t escape the gendered roles of parenting and the unrealistic expectations many moms find themselves laboring under. Rachel talks about how she found herself raising her daughter with “Traditional Parenting Roles” forced on her by circumstance, rather than a desire to perform feats of domestic heroism and establish herself the savior of her home.
